BOWERS & WILKINS B&W Theater Speakers 802D SCMS ASW855 HTM2 SOLD:

Submitted by Mike on February 24, 2014
Sale Price
$11,600.00

On the one hand, technology items and electronics depreciate faster than a new car. But on the other hand, any high-end name brand item holds value longer than a lesser item. The retail price on these speakers was about $25,000 in 2006 - so being able to recoup nearly 50% in 2014 was noteworthy. We actually did the consignment customer a favor by selling them as a group as opposed to parting them out and this saved him quite a bit of money in commissions.

Consigning Furniture: What sells?

Submitted by Mike on January 27, 2014

As a consignment store that sells furniture, you might think that we would take most any good used piece. We know from experience however that only certain types and styles of furniture will sell in our 90 day contract term. For starters, we generally prefer to only take case goods such as tables and other wood pieces. We find that upholstered furniture, even if spotless, just doesn't sell well.

Antique Chinese Ivory Guan Yin Bodhisattva fertility Goddess Qianlong Dynasty: SOLD

Submitted by Mike on January 9, 2014
Sale Price
$6,000.00

As an experienced consignment broker, we can handle most any items of value. When this small collection of Asian ivory was brought to us, we knew we had to give thought to how it was sold. For Asian ivory, the law mandates that we could only legally sell it to someone in the same state as the owner (Maryland). While some people do sneak ivory on eBay the practice of using the word 'faux' is deceptive and we did not want any potential buyers to be mislead into undervaluing the pieces we had. Working together with an ivory expert, we had these pieces appraised.

Oceanaut Baltica Watch Mens 52mm Chronograph SOLD:

Submitted by Mike on November 25, 2013
Sale Price
$93.00

I felt really bad for the owner of this piece since it sold for such a low price. This watch was about $1,000 new - but the various reviews around the internet stated that it was a cheap over-priced model made in China and didn't even keep good time. Even second-hand shoppers are savvy - in this day and age more than ever. If you're going to buy nice things - go with long time name brands and not some upstart 'high end' company.

WDCC Walt Disney Mickey Mouse Porcelain Figure Sculpture SOLD:

Submitted by Mike on November 25, 2013
Sale Price
$149.00

Disneyana pieces are always good sellers. It actually surprises me that they keep spitting out this stuff - made in China as it is - and people keep buying it. Sadly, this piece was broken in shipping - despite being in it's factory packaging. We had to 'eat' the sale as it did not have enough value to insure and filing a claim is always a chore even if it did. Part of the benefit of using a consignment store to sell your items is that we are accountable for your things so that you don't have to worry about problems that might arise.

Jay Strongwater Art Glass Jungle Egg SOLD:

Submitted by Mike on November 25, 2013
Sale Price
$207.00

Anything high end or hand made will always have a following, especially when sold at stores such as Neiman Marcus. Just because you've never heard of a brand or artist before - don't assume it's not worth anything. Granted, this faberge type piece was $500 new and had never been out of the box - yet it only sold for 40% of the original cost.

WWII Era Art Deco Canadian Aerospace Vintage Smoking Stand Lighted Floor Ashtray SOLD:

Submitted by Mike on November 25, 2013
Sale Price
$995.00

I told my consignor I would get about $1,000 for this - and I did. I let the general public know in my listing that wasn't in a hurry to sell it and I didn't really care what the market said it was worth because they don't make things like this anymore. Someone contacted me shortly after I posted it offering $500, but I turned them down. They told me I would never get my price - I think I'm going to let them know that I did. If you give us something on consignment that is potentially worth a million dollars - I will try to get it for you.

Copenhagen Porcelain Figurine Boy with Dog 1072 Smooth Fox Terrier: SOLD

Submitted by Mike on November 24, 2013
Sale Price
$315.00

We know porcelain figures by makers such as Lladro always sell well - but we honestly didn't expect this Copenhagen piece to go for very much. Let me just tell you that dog people love their pets and we knew that if we could identify the type of dog - we could pull in a few extra bids and that we did!

Packing & Shipping

Submitted by Mike on November 21, 2013

As a consignment store, a good portion of the value we offer in selling things is packing and shipping them to the whole world. You can't imagine how much work this is or how much grief we get from buyers over the cost of shipping. Some big volume sellers offer to ship items for free - but since we are working for only a percentage of the sale, we can not afford to do this. In most cases, we sell expensive items in an auction format starting at a mere $10 opening bid and let it go to the highest bidder.

Gumps Beryl Miller Hand Painted Wooden Folk Art Artisan Christmas Ornaments SOLD:

Submitted by Mike on November 3, 2013
Sale Price
$200.00

Believe it or not, these 14 ornaments had a combined retail value of almost $1,000. We had hoped to do a little better than 200, but selling things on eBay is very name brand driven. They might not have even sold at all, but the beauty of selling off a huge estate of similar items is that we can rope people in to see what we have through other listings. In the world of sales, they call it 'cross marketing'.

19pc Lot Towle Sterling Silver Christmas Ornaments SOLD:

Submitted by Mike on November 3, 2013
Sale Price
$521.00

We are learning that people are very serious about owning fine Christmas ornaments. While these sterling pieces had good value just in weight - about 13oz which would be about $250 scrap - the bidders were far more interested in the craftsmanship value. A metal dealer would have only paid about $100 for this group.

Vintage W & LE Gurley Compass: SOLD:

Submitted by Mike on October 20, 2013
Sale Price
$41.00

As you can see, I'm trying to include some lower value items in the blog. We found this while helping the owner trustee clean out an estate. It was in a junk drawer and would have wound up in the trash had we not rescued it. Older period items that might be military related are always good sellers. We love digging through estates!

Vintage Masonic Templar Knight Dress Ceremonial Belt Buckle Lilly Co SOLD:

Submitted by Mike on October 20, 2013
Sale Price
$42.00

It was really hard to tell how old this piece was.... the metalwork did not have any branding, so aside from obvious references - it was also hard to identify... As a consignment store, we see a lot of different things and can be your best resource for identifying old pieces....
